Lilly reached the sanctuary of her room and locked the door with a frustrated sigh.

What the Hell was going on?

Instead of sharpening her claws, she was losing every hard edge she had—and crying? Crying?! It was ridiculous. She should have been climbing him like a tree in that hallway, dropping his pants and getting him into every compromising position she could manage with the aid of six boxes of tissues and toilet paper so that the first hotel staffer with a camera phone could see about securing their retirement with tabloid dollars. It might not have been the most solid finish, but it would have been something.

Instead she’d ran.

Demons do not cry.

A Temptress is many things. But coward is generally not on the list. They are also not known to be sentimental, emotional messes who cling to a man and find themselves the victims of desire. They served it up. They did not crave. They did not long for a man’s touch out of his presence. They did not consider one man above another or start to entertain failure. They did not miss the mark. They did not stutter, stumble or fall behind.

And above all things, they did not cry.

Her tears rattled her more than she wanted to admit. Every exchange with Jackson was affecting her more. Which meant some clock she wasn’t previously aware of was in motion. Her target was proving to be more dangerous than she’d imagined possible. Jackson Kent, ordinary mortal man, was tearing through her internal defenses like wet tissue paper.

If this keeps up, I’ll go soft by Monday.

Soft was not acceptable. Demons who lost their edge tended to disappear from the building and the rumors of their ends were the stuff of nightmares.

She sighed and began to pace the room. Demons prided themselves on their self-control. Tears. Tears were for addle-headed fools and angels. It was a running joke in the halls of Hades Enterprises that Angels were notorious for weeping at every rainbow and sunset, and the speculation of what maudlin gifts they exchanged at their office white elephant parties was a vast source of humorous demonic speculation.

Lilly snorted in disgust at the awkward terror of getting a monogrammed tissue box holder from her boss on her return to the office.

“When Hell freezes over!” she proclaimed as her phone signaled an inbound text.

Lilly opened it to see that Ben had already completed a full report. She uploaded it and anxiously scanned the data only to have her disbelief and confusion deepen at every revelation of the man’s goodness.

Jackson Kent was a gifted businessman whose investments were solid and very profitable. He led a comfortable life but beyond a great apartment and tasteful wardrobe, he’d taken on none of the trappings of ostentation. No entourage when he traveled. One personal assistant and accountant. One lawyer and the obligatory sports agent behind the scenes. Lillith’s disbelief and confusion only deepened at every detailed non-revelation.

The accountant was his college roommate and best friend and his lawyer was the daughter of his favorite high school coach.
